First Run: Vibram Five Fingers

It really was just a matter of time until I got a pair of these shoes. I wanted to get these before I got my Nike Frees, but was a little too scared so I had to wait until I ran through those shoes until I could try them (I didn’t actually need new shoes, but I couldn’t wait any longer). I went to a small little running shop called “Runner’s High N Tri” in Arlington Heights. The place was great, and the people super nice. I tried on a pair of the Bikilas (the new running shoe version). I really wanted to try running in the classic ones, but these felt so good it was a no brainer.

So, I took a short three mile run on a treadmill and everything felt great (it wasn’t until a few hours later that my calves were really sore). There isn’t a lot of mobility in my toes (I can’t wiggle them like I thought I would be able to) but I felt significantly lighter and more agile in these shoes. The main difference is I can’t be lazy in my stride. If I come down too hard on my heal I feel it and immediately modify.

I don’t think I will have the same dramatic change in these shoes that I did when I started in my Nike Frees because there isn’t as much of a running style change. I guess we’ll see as I get some more miles on them. The first impression is great. They are super comfortable and give a lot more feedback on how I am running so I naturally run more smoothly.

My biggest issue with these shoes is that they smell terrible (brand new). I don’t know if they dipped these in new car sent before shipping them out the door but they seriously have some crazy odor about them. Soon they will smell like sweat (since I can’t wear socks with them), so I’m not expecting the smell is going to get better in any time soon.

First Post!

by on Apr.04, 2009, under Other

Some time ago I used to blog semi-regularly, but that ended for a variety of reasons. Since that time I have been trying to find groups of people to discuss the topics that are most interesting. That usually means trying to understand theology, not in esoteric or abstract terms, but more of a logic and concrete foundation. Needless to say, finding local groups (or even just a person or two) who has the desire and ability to think in such ways is difficult. Since that time I’ve found that I contemplate such things less often and become more complacent with the way things are. So, I’m back to the beginning. Hopefully with a place to ponder these ideas once again I will walk farther down the road to truth (if nothing else I’ll at least amuse myself in the process).
